Storytelling has always been an intuitive art form. As a tale is told, it changes with the imagination of each storyteller. I write original folk tales. I start by thinking about a puzzle, a question, one that fascinated me as a child. Then I pretend that I am a storyteller living in an ancient time before writing, and magically my tale begins.

Most of my folk tales are stories that would have been told around tribal campfires. People and animals and the gods of nature are the players. Their conflicts, interactions, and consequences become the meat of the tales. And like many folk tales, by the end, a lesson is learned or a question answered.

Sometimes I write in the style of a Creation Story. These stories answer questions about the beginning of things and the mysteries of life. Modern science has helped us to better understand the origins of our world and the universe. But long ago, how might those same things been explained in a primitive culture? I enjoy exploring what an original mind might have thought when faced with such a puzzle.

Who steals the sun at night? What makes the sky blue? When will the clouds grow back? Where are the raindrops before they fall? Why can some animals fly while some walk on land and others live under water? How did the first people get born?

Imagine.
